Michael Bay’s ‘Pain & Gain’, starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, won the North American weekend box office but its $20m return was below market expectations.  The bodybuilding action comedy, which has provoked controversy for allegedly making light of a vicious real life extortion gang, received a disappointing ‘C+’ CinemaScore on its Friday debut.


Last weekend’s No.1, ‘Oblivion’, grossed a further $17.4m in line with expectations to secure second place.  Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi adventure, starring Tom Cruise, has now taken an early $64.7m after two weekends in play.


Brian Helgeland’s surprise package, ’42’, continued its strong run, grossing an impressive $10.7m over the three days.  Boosted by strong word of mouth, the Jackie Robinson biopic has taken its overall tally to $69.1m.

Shane Black’s ‘Iron Man 3’, starring Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, smashed the international weekend box office record when it debuted on an astounding $198.4m.  The Disney/Marvel superhero adventure claimed the No. 1 spot in all 42 territories where it landed and has lucrative openings in China, Russia and Germany later this week.  The UK proved to be its most successful market after grossing a massive $21.1m over the three days, with South Korea not far behind, just short of the $20m mark.  The Avengers set the previous record last summer when it returned $185.1m.


Last weekend’s No.1, ‘G.I. Matt Creed’s directorial debut ‘Lily’, a collaboration with co-writer and lead actress, Amy Grantham, provides a reflection on changing perspectives after serious illness.  Looking to reach beyond a straight drama, various stylistic devices will depict the lead character’s comprehensive revaluation of her life.



Stand Clear of the Closing Doors (USA)

An autistic teenager finds refuge amongst New York’s subway dwellers in Sam Fleischner’s eagerly awaited ‘Stand Clear of the Closing Doors’.  Based on a true story, the boy’s temporary disappearance forces his family to face up to differences, which now take on a new perspective.  Sam Fleischner’s debut feature, ‘Wah Do Dem’, co-directed with Ben Chace, picked up best dramatic feature at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

Laurie Collyer’s ‘Sunlight Jr’ is the latest feature tackling the recession from the perspective of those who least contributed towards it but feel the impact most.  Starring Naomi Watts and Matt Dillon, a lowly paid shop worker and her paraplegic partner hit hard times after she falls pregnant.  It is Collyer’s follow up to ‘Sherrybaby’, which won a Crystal Globe at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.


World Documentary Competition:


Aatsinki: The Story of Arctic Cowboys (Finland)

The cowboys of the film’s title are a modern day version who herd reindeer in the Finnish Lapland.  Experienced documentary filmmaker, Jessica Oreck, spends a year in the life of two herders as they go about their work in one of the harshest climates in the world.  Oreck is best known for ‘Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo’, which won a special jury prize for artistic vision at the CineVegas International Film Festival.



Big Man (USA)
Rachel Boynton


Rachel Boynton came to the fore with her political campaign exposé, ‘Our Brand Is Crisis’, which received an Independent Spirit Awards nomination for best documentary.  After a lapse of eight years, Boynton now returns with ‘Big Man’, a look at American corporations’ attack on Africa’s oil reserves.  Brad Pitt is one of the executive producers.



The Genius of Marian (USA)
Banker White and Anna Fitch


Banker White, who won the documentary award at the AFI Fest with ‘The Refugee All Stars’, joins forces with experienced TV documentarian, Anna Fitch, for his second feature, ‘The Genius of Marian’.  They take us on a highly personal journey following White’s mother, who like her own before, struggles to cope with Alzheimer’s.



The Kill Team (USA)
Dan Krauss


Dan Krauss is best known as a cinematographer, most recently working on Doug Hamilton’s ‘Broadway Idiot’, which debuted at last month’s South by Southwest Film Festival.  But Krauss has already made his mark in the directors chair with his Oscar nominated ‘The Life of Kevin Carter’, which won best short documentary at Tribeca eight years ago.  His debut in the long form is the latest film to examine alleged American war crimes; this time following one of the U.S. Army infantry soldiers from the so-called ‘The Kill Team’, accused of going on a murderous rampage in Afghanistan.



Let the Fire Burn (USA)

Jason Osder, an assistant professor at The George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs, makes his feature documentary debut with ‘Let the Fire Burn’.  Tackling race conflicts in the States from a new angle, Osder comprehensively explores the explosive 1980s battle between the African-American revolutionary group, MOVE, and the Philadelphia authorities.

After seven shorts in five years, Sean Dunne makes the move to feature documentaries with ‘Oxyana’.  A look at the hard times facing redundant industries in contemporary America, Dunne follows the residents of a former mining town living with the effects of drug addiction.

Leonard Retel Helmrich and Hetty Naaijkens-Retel Helmrich


Experienced documentary filmmaker, Leonard Retel Helmrich, who won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance with ‘Shape of the Moon’, resumes his collaboration with sister, Hetty Naaijkens-Retel Helmrich on ‘Raw Herring’.  The pair reflect on the herring’s importance to Dutch culture, at a time when foreign competition threatens the local fishermen’s livelihood.

‘The Rocket’ is the big winner at Tribeca

Spring Breakers

A surreal combo of ‘gangsta rap’ urban mythology and a highly produced contemporary take on Sixties sexploitation takes us to the sun drenched Florida beaches during the annual college spring break.  Overdosing on bikini’d girls, young male torsos, hard partying and real and faux guns in a psychedelic explosion of blaring colour, the once ‘enfant terrible’ of American indie film, Harmony Korine, camps it up to such an extent that it could bring to mind Susan Sontag’s wonderful line ‘serious about the frivolous, frivolous about the serious’.  And, no doubt, there is no shortage of those who will simply dismiss it as being frivolous about the frivolous – the old guard once again rejecting anything too closely resembling forbidden underground territory – but, when judged on its own terms, free of unnecessary prejudices, this is a smart and biting post modern assault on the tattered remains of the American Dream in the aftermath of the ‘greed’ meltdown.


James Franco is in terrific form as ‘Alien’, a cornrowed, metal-toothed and permanently smirking white rapper, complete with ostentatious sports car, rip-off Hawaiian Shirts and a beachfront apartment that glitters with gold bullets and enough arsenal to be the envy of a small army.  He is the antithesis of De Niro’s Travis Bickle; displaying his hardware with a flippant vanity that absorbs and mocks phallic symbolism at one and the same time, pushing superficiality to its extreme.  One pivotal scene, taking on the appearance of a grotesque caricature of an already over-the-top pop video of intentional bad taste, finds Alien yelling in contemptuous defiance “All this sheeyit!” as he gestures with his hideous designer guns, “Look at my sheeyit?”.


Seduced by all this “sheeyit” are three college girls, who turn over a fast food joint ‘Pulp Fiction’ style to fund a trip away from small town American nothingness and take a fourth friend – a sexy Christian, the ironically named ‘Faith’ – along for the ride.  In a superb piece of casting, two Disney Channel stars, Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez, former daytime TV child actress, Ashley Benson, and the filmmaker’s wife, Rachel Korine, play the quartet against the grain in a full-on display of squalid ‘flesh as meat’ cynicism.


Repeated scenes are at first hypnotic, perpetuating the sense of the characters’ alcoholic/drug-induced-haze of non-stop action – the ultimate blow-out – but soon take on a self-reflexion, drawing attention to the film’s contrivance, as the trashy remains of consumerism’s appalling excesses start to implode Godard style.  Alien’s fixed grin takes on a ‘smile of collusion’ as the characters and audience are sucked in to a terrible societal melancholia of our own making, and there is nothing left beyond the emptiness that the college girls were looking to escape.  This is a dose of nastiness that forces us to look in the mirror of regret when it is too late for change – a shocking existential nihilism.propranolol generic costcheapest inderalbuy propranolol canadainderal online uk

Last weekend’s No. 1, ’42’, grossed a further $18m for an impressive hold in second place.  The Jackie Robinson biopic now stands at $54.1m after benefiting from strong word of mouth.


DreamWorks’ ‘The Croods’ took advantage of being the only family animation currently in the market and returned $9.5m for another solid weekend.  It was enough for the prehistoric adventure to cross the $150m milestone .


Derek Cianfrance’s ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’, starring Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper, grossed a decent $4.7m from 1,542 sites.  Focus had expanded the crime drama from 514 theatres, taking its running total to $11.4m.

Beyond the Hills

Cristian Mungiu does what the Eastern Europeans have always done extremely well, combining hard edged realism with political metaphor to telling effect.  What was once filmmakers’ only means of responding to the brutal totalitarian regimes has now become a matter of style but one that allows more latitude, free of the consequences of slightly overstepping the mark.  It is a natural development that has found its most complete form in the Romanian new wave, where local filmmakers are making sense of the present within the context of a recent terrible past in much the same way as German New Cinema did in the postwar period.


Mungiu takes us ‘beyond the hills’ of the film’s title to a forbidding monastery within contemporary Romania but it could just as easily be from any time during last three or four centuries.  This is a bleak self-contained place where a handful of nuns live a feudal existence, obeying the every command of ‘Father’, a tyrannical priest who enforces the scriptures with a Ceaușescu-style iron fist.  We see all the tell tale signs of oppression; the fear of the known becoming an irrational paranoia, with Christian mythology and the scars of state sponsored persecution all wrapped up in one.


One day is much the same as any other here, or at least, until the arrival of Alina, who puts the cat amongst the pigeons big style.  She visits Voichita, once her childhood soul mate and ‘friend with benefits’ when sharing beds in a cruel orphanage where sexual abuse by others was part of the daily routine.  Voichita is now a dedicated nun; she still loves her friend but ‘in a different way’ and urges Alina to confess and the Father to allow her to stay.


What follows is an affecting and deeply disturbing depiction of emotional repression and blind faith, where the two come into conflict in ways that are patently unresolvable.  Cristina Flutur plays Alina with a dangerous edginess, her fixed scowl making no attempt to conceal a resentment of everything.  She provides a striking binary opposite to the passive and compliant Voichita, who Cosmina Stratan portrays with a quiet desperation, hinting at an inner turmoil that is destined to remain below the surface.  Flutur and Stratan are newcomers to the big screen and deservedly shared the best actress prize at Cannes for two highly diverse but very convincing portrayals of long term damage from the same source.


Valeriu Andriuta, who had a minor role in Mungiu’s debut feature ‘Occident’, also excels as the Father; making a mockery of his almost complete absence from cinema during the intervening ten years.  It is a nuanced performance that explores the Father’s misogyny and fear – grappling with the constraints of being a cowardly bully – when Alina turns to profanity as a weapon of verbal destruction.  And there is an overwhelming sense of the Father drowning under the burden of the Church’s own preachings as his explosive conflict with Alina drives towards an exorcism, where acts of appalling cruelty and religious dogma become indistinguishable.


We see snippets of today’s Romania beyond the monastery walls; a transitional society, impoverished and largely left to its own resources.  Just as in Corneliu Porumboiu’s ‘Police Adjective’, old school attitudes still dominate institutions and we are aware that it will remain that way for at least another generation.  A typical hospital scene has a weary sixty-something doctor recklessly discharging Alina to the care of the nuns, one less patient to treat in a total abdication of his responsibility.


Mungiu has based his film on a real life case; making it serve as an analogy for the Ceaușescu years and a biting criticism of the Church and contemporary Romanian apathy.  Like all great filmmakers, he possesses the ability to see things very clearly.propranolol generic costcheapest inderalbuy propranolol canadainderal online uk

Cannes’ competition line-up announced

New films from world cinema heavyweights, Asghar Farhadi, Jia Zhangke and Kore-Eda Hirokazu, head an impressive competition line-up for the 66th edition of the Cannes Film Festival.


Three previous Palme d’Or winners return.  Coen Brothers’ ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ has looked a shoo-in for some time and Roman Polanski’s ‘Venus in Furs’ won’t raise too many eyebrows.  The inclusion of Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace biopic  ‘Behind the Candelabra’ is a surprise, with the TV movie seeming more likely to receive an out-of-competition screening.  It makes for an interesting six months for Soderbergh, whose big screen swansong ‘Side Effects’ appeared at Berlin earlier this year.


The selection of Alexander Payne’s keenly awaited road movie, ‘Nebraska’, and Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘Drive’ follow up ‘Only God Forgives’, with Ryan Gosling returning, will attract wide media attention.  It is a second time in the competition for both filmmakers, as it is for Francois Ozon, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun and Takashi Miike, whose latest films are also included.


After last year’s furore following an all-male line-up, Cannes organisers are likely to court further controversy this time around with only one of the films being directed by a woman.  It was Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi’s third feature, ‘Un Chateau en Italie’ a comedy drama starring Louis Garrel.


Speculation that Steve McQueen’s ‘Twelve Years A Slave’ would be finished in time for a Cannes competition berth proved unfounded.

The Jackie Robinson biopic, ’42′, starring Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford, gave Warner Bros some welcome respite from a disappointing year at the North American box office, when it massively over-performed during the weekend.  Bolstered by an A+ CinemaScore, it easily secured the No. 1 spot after finishing on $27m, being $7m more than best predictions.  It is the fourth feature of Brian Helgeland, who is best known as the Oscar winning co- writer of L.A. Confidential.


There was no such success for the other weekend wide opener, ‘Scary Movie 5’, which could only muster a poor $15m in second place.  It was not quite as bad as the horror parody’s Friday debut indicated but still represents the franchise’s worst opening weekend by some way.


Two former No. 1’s, ‘The Croods’ and ‘G.I. Joe Retaliation’, who finished level last weekend,  performed well in the third and fourth positions, taking $13.2m and $10.8m respectively.  But last weekend’s No 1, ‘Evil Dead’, suffered from the curse of the horror genre and took a tumble during its second weekend, finishing fifth, after grossing $9.5m over the three days.yasmin yasmine yasmin pill yasmin birth control

The Jackie Robinson biopic, ’42’, made a flying start at the North American box office, grossing $9.1m on Friday.  With the boost of an A+ CinemaScore, the strong word of mouth could generate as high as $28m over the three days.  It is Oscar winning writer Brian Helgeland’s fourth feature in the director’s chair and stars Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford.


Horror parody, ‘Scary Movie 5’, the other wide weekend opener, disappointed in second place after posting $5.5m.  It was the franchise’s worst opener by some way and will finish the three days on approximately $13.5m.


Last weekend’s No 1, ‘Evil Dead’, grossed $3.1m in line with expectations.  It represents a 73% fall for the horror reboot, which seems on course for a $9m second weekend.


Two former No.1’s, ‘The Croods’ and ‘G.I. Joe Retaliation’ wound up joint second last weekend and they were neck and neck again on Friday.  ‘The Croods’ finished a mere $100k ahead on $3m but, with stronger appeal amongst family matinee audiences, it will pull away over Saturday and Sunday and should gross a solid $11m.  ‘G.I. Supposedly, Steven Soderbergh is hanging up his camera for a paintbrush and his latest feature, ‘Side Effects’, will be the prolific filmmaker’s swansong but, at the age of fifty, it seems no more plausible than a boxer’s premature retirement when rumours of a big fight comeback are already surfacing.  Like the other ‘one movie a year man’ of American film, Woody Allen, an over-demanding schedule has sometimes taken its toll on quality, but cinema is such an integral part of his life – a highly active producer, editor and cinematographer in addition to his directing duties – the lure of the big screen has become as much a drug to Soderbergh as the uppers and downers that drive the narrative in this intriguing psychological drama turned Hitchcockian thriller.


Brimming with energy, this is a work of a filmmaker in full flow; finding new ways of exploring favourite themes, which the unwary may take as being a summation of his career but the more prudent will perceive as an auteur doing his thing.  Moving around the filmmaking spectrum – taking in indie and mainstream styles and venturing beyond the border between the two – this is a slippery pleasure wholly appropriate for a film where nothing is quite what it seems; wilfully shifting between serious drama and pastiche, keeping us on our toes.


A typical Soderbergh set-up has corporate corruption and medical ethics colliding within a white-collar drugs culture, where bourgeois pushers and users, in all but name, hide behind the air of respectability of dodgy prescriptions.  Jude Law, in fine form, plays an English psychiatrist, Dr Jonathan Banks, who has made a quick buck since moving to Manhattan on the back of the latest anti-depressant drugs and thinks nothing of slipping his wife a Prozac or two to calm the nerves before a crucial job interview. “It doesn’t make you anyone you’re not” he tells her “it makes it easier to be who you are”.


Banks – vain, arrogant and dangerously persuasive – seemingly believes his own fraud; readily prescribing drugs that he has not checked but where his ‘obligatory health warnings’ have such sincerity, they add to the sense of credibility.  He is very much the Hitchcockian shady doctor, whose life is something of a time bomb, one close to exploding when he encounters Emily Taylor, an alluring but disturbed twenty something with a dark secret.  Hopelessly out of his depth, he falls for all the traps of Freudian amateur psychoanalysis, trying to make sense of his client very purposefully driving her car at speed into a car park wall.


Rooney Mara mesmerises as the agitated Emily, giving her a pre-occupied presence – an ethereal-like abstraction – drawing in the audience just as Emily does to Banks.  We cannot take our eyes off her, wholly convincing as the emotional victim struggling to cope with the loss of the good life after her husband is banged-up for insider trading and, yet, seemingly pulling the strings in ways that contradict her condition.


Catherine Zeta-Jones adds to the cocktail of noir menace, playing Emily’s former psychiatrist, Dr Victoria Siebert, an icy femme fatale who is as cynical as Banks is naive.  She toys with her male colleague, introducing him to a new miracle drug, which, of course, will change his life in ways that he could never have imagined.


A genuine ‘page turner’ of a movie with much food for thought, Soderbergh is as sharp as ever in the director’s chair.  No less impressive is his work as cinematographer – using his usual pseudonym, Peter Andrews – and watch out for an opening tracking shot almost on a par with Marco Onorato’s that so brilliantly lead us into Matteo Garrone’s Cannes title, ‘Reality’.


OK, it has the conventional contrived ending that we associate with the thriller genre, where justice is partly seen to be done, but with it turning on a scene involving the deceitful use of a truth drug, we can let it pass for irony – just.yasmin yasmine yasmin pill yasmin birth control

‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’, starring Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson, retained its No. 1 spot at the international weekend box office after grossing a strong $40.2m.  Paramount’s action adventure was active in 60 markets in total with South Korea delivering the highest return of  $3.7m.  It currently stands at $145.2m internationally after two weeks.


DreamWorks’ 3D animation, ‘The Croods’, continued its impressive international run, adding a further $34.1m over the three days.  The prehistoric adventure screened in two more territories than ‘G.I. The ‘Evil Dead’ reboot, starring Jane Levy, won the North American weekend box office, after grossing an impressive $26m.  Uruguayan filmmaker, Fede Alvarez, made his feature debut with the R-rated horror after his short, ‘Panic Attack’, impressed Sam Raimi, the director of the original and co-producer on the remake.  Reaping the rewards of a $17m modest budget, it should generate a solid profit, with the international and secondary markets building on an encouraging domestic opening.


The battle for second place has looked too close to call all weekend and, so it proved, with two former No 1’s, sharing the honours on $21.1m.  ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ made the stronger start with a front-loaded Friday but ‘The Croods’ drew level on the back of family matinee audiences.


Universal’s 3D ‘Jurassic Park’ re-release came in second on Friday night but could not sustain it over the three days.  The classic dinosaur adventure still finished on a very respectable $18.2m.

Safety in recycling the past continued at the North American box office with the weekend’s two wide releases being a remake and a 3D re-release.


There was a solid start for a remake of ‘Evil Dead’, grossing $11.9m from the Thursday midnight screenings and Friday.  The R-rated horror, which the original’s director, Sam Raimi, is co-producing, will be front-loaded but should still finish the weekend on $26m.

‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ took the international markets by storm with the strongest performance of the year so far.  The action sequel grossed an outstanding $80.3m on the back of multiple No 1’s, with Russia being the most successful territory on $11m.  After factoring in North America, its opening weekend took a whopping $132m worldwide.
