‘Apes 2’ to retain top spot

July 19th, 2014 - Graham Eley

Fox’s ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ grossed an impressive $10.4m at Friday’s North American box office, slightly ahead of already high expectations.  This puts the reboot sequel on pace for a $35m second weekend hold with its 52% fall – 49% after stripping out the film’s opening Thursday previews – comparing favourably with other summer tentpoles.

‘The Purge: Anarchy’ opened with a strong $12.9m to lead the box office on Friday night but, after factoring in the usual horror genre front loading, it will finish behind ‘Apes 2’ over the weekend when the film should take around $28m.  It received a ‘B’ CinemaScore, which is almost top end for the notoriously hard marking horror crowd.

Disney’s sequel ‘Planes: Fire & Rescue’ came third with a decent $6.3m launch and it could hit the $20m mark for the weekend on the back of family audiences and a powerful ‘A’ CinemaScore.

And the weekend’s other wide opener, Sony’s $40m ‘Sex Tape’, massively disappointed with a poor $5.6m Friday and will struggle to return much more than $15m during the three days after a damaging C+ CinemaScore.  Market analysts had predicted $10m more.

Richard Linklater’s early Oscar hopeful, ‘Boyhood’, which had a spectacular $71,800 per-screen average last weekend for the second-highest limited opening of the year, grossed a further $270k on Friday after expanding from 5 to 34 theatres.  It should finish the weekend just under the $1m mark.generic propecia from canada
