Morgan Spurlock’s boy band concert doc hits the mark at the box office
Sony’s ‘One Direction: This Is Us’ has gained control of the North American box office, grossing a high $8.9m on its Friday debut. A sign of the times concert doc, Morgan Spurlock, who has made his name with a sardonic look at the ugly side of commercialism, directs this subject friendly take on the boy band’s rise to stardom after their X-Factor appearance. The film hit the mark with the group’s fans, receiving a predictable ‘A’ CinemaScore and, boosted by powerful word of mouth, should finish the Labor Day weekend between $26-27m.
Last weekend’s No.1, ‘The Butler’ had an excellent third week hold in second place. The early award season contender grossed a higher than expected $3.6m on Friday, representing a weekly fall of just 26%. It should finish the four days around $16.5m.
Running close behind, ‘We’re the Millers’, continued its outstanding run, taking a further $3.4m during Friday. The daring comedy remains active in a market high 3,445 theatres and its week-on-week fall off rate was even less than the ‘The Butler’ at a remarkable 23%. New Line and Warner Bros will be looking at an approximate four day return of $15m.
It was a disastrous opening Friday for Warner Bros’ ‘Getaway’. The crime thriller, starring Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke, followed its mauling at the hands of the critics with a ‘C+’ CinemaScore from first night audiences and could only muster $1.4m at the box office. It is on pace to take $4.5m during the four day session.
Focus released John Crowley’s latest feature, ‘Closed Circuit’, starring Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall, in 870 theatres. It disappointed with a poor $860 per-theatre average.
As did Wong Kar-wai’s Ip Man biopic, The Grandmaster’, which the Weinstein Company expanded from seven to 749 theatres on Friday. The bold move only yielded a per-theatre average of just under $988.
There was better news for Eugenio Derbez’s ‘Instructions Not Included’. The Mexican comedy boasted a strong $5,475 per-theatre average on its 347-wide Friday launch.doxycycline costbuy doxycycline ukdoxycycline genericdoxycycline buybuy doxycycline ukprice of doxycyclinedoxycycline buy
