Zach Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel’ made a flying start at the North American weekend box office with the highest ever June debut. The Superman reboot, starring Henry Cavill, Amy Adams and Michael Shannon, grossed an outstanding $113.1m over the three days, taking its tally to $125.1m after factoring in early Thursday evening screenings. Warner launched it in 4,207 theatres and boasted a $29,731 per-location average.
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s ‘This Is the End’ is doing the business for Sony having already grossed more than its production cost since opening on Wednesday. The ‘end of the world’ comedy, co-starring James Franco and Jonah Hill, earned an impressive $20.5m during the weekend as part of its early running total of $32.8m.
Sofia Coppola’s real life celebrity theft drama, ‘The Bling Ring’ is the talk of the speciality market. A24 released the Cannes Un Certain Regard opener in five locations for a superb $42,000 per-screen average.
RADiUS-TWC launched another high-profile festival title, ‘Twenty Feet From Stardom’, which competed for the special jury prize at this year’s Sundance.
