‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ has claimed the No 1 spot from ‘The Hobbit’ at the weekend North American box office after grossing $23m for a $8,785 per site average. The massacre horror was front loaded, as expected, and fell away slightly over the weekend after taking an excellent $10.6m on a busy opening Friday. Its three day tally, though, comfortably exceeded expectations.
‘Django Unchained’ had a strong hold in second place, adding $20.1m over the weekend. Quentin Tarantino’s controversial Western has now taken $106.4m since its Christmas Day opening.
‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ fell from top spot to third but continued to perform strongly. Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth adventure grossed an additional $17.5m over the weekend, taking its overall domestic total to $263.8m.
‘Les Misérables’ became another Christmas Day opener to cross the $100m mark after returning a high $16.1m for the fourth placed film. Tom Hooper’s musical adaptation’s overall tally has now fallen $3m behind ‘Django’ after taking an early lead.
‘Parental Guidance’ continued to make steady progress in fifth spot, taking a further $10.1m over the three days.
