The latest horror movie from the Guillermo del Toro stable, ‘Mama’ massively exceeded expectations at the North American box office when grossing $10m on its Friday launch.  It now has a shot at exceeding $30m over the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. weekend notwithstanding a comparatively light advertising campaign.

Last weekend’s No 1, ‘Zero Dark Thirty’, returned a slightly lower than expected $4.5m on Friday but it should still take the second spot. The controversial Osama bin Laden thriller seems set for a four day tally in the high teens.

Fox’s crime thriller, ‘Broken City’, starring Mark Wahlberg, could only muster a luke warm $3m  on its opening Friday.  Oscar nominee, ‘Silver Linings Playbook’, was hot its heels with $2.95m and may have more staying power in the battle for third place.
