Universal’s ‘Non-Stop’, starring Liam Neeson, comfortably exceeded expectations on its opening Friday at the North American box office, grossing a strong $10.6m from 3,090 theatres. An ‘A-‘ CinemaScore will further propel word of mouth, leaving the air bound thriller on pace for an excellent weekend tally around the $30m mark.
The ‘Son of God’ was almost impossible to track coming into the weekend with its marketing campaign targeted at religious groups rather than usual cinema audiences. As it turned out, the shortened version of the History channel’s ‘The Bible’ hit the mark on its debut and grossed a stunning $9.5m from 3,255 theatres. It also received an ‘A-‘ CinemaScore, setting up a close battle with ‘Non-Stop’ for weekend supremacy.
Last weekend’s No.1, ‘The Lego Movie’, remains active in a market high 3,770 theatres. It grossed a further $4.4m on Friday in third place and should come close to reaching $20m over the three days.
