Universal continued its strong year at the North American box office with ‘Non-Stop’ becoming the studio’s third film to open in top position following ‘Lone Survivor’ and ‘Ride Along’. The air bound thriller exceeded expectations by approximately $5m after grossing a stunning $30m over the three days from 3,090 theatres. Liam Neeson players the lead alongside Julianne Moore and Sunday’s Oscar winner, Lupita Nyong’o.
The ‘Son of God’ came into the weekend as something of an unknown quantity with it targeting a specialist religious audience without a track record. In the end, the shortened version of the History channel’s ‘The Bible’ earned a remarkable $26.5m from 3,255 theatres, which is far higher than the most optimistic guesstimates.
Last weekend’s No 1, ‘The Lego Movie’ returned a slightly higher than expected $21m from a market high 3,770 theatres. It was enough to take the comedy animation over the $200m milestone domestically after four weekends in play.
