‘Spidey 2’ makes Sony sweat

Sony’s ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’, starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx, arrived in North America with a so-so $35.5m opening Friday (including $8.7m from late Thursday screenings).  This is in line with scaled down expectations after Thursday night was quieter than expected, and the superhero sequel should finish the weekend around the $90m mark but only if there was solid support from family audiences on Saturday and Sunday.  Some where predicting $100m+ earlier in the week.

 

The pressure is on for Sony with the film carrying a whopping production budget in excess of $250m and a marketing spend close to $200m.  The film received disappointing reviews – currently 54% on Rotten Tomatoes – but a more generous ‘B+’ CinemaScore from first night audiences (and an A- amongst the important under 25 group).

 

Disney’s ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ currently holds the record for the highest opening of the year so far with $95m.
